Issued as part of the Royal Australian Mint's ongoing licensed music commemorative program, this piece marks the 45th anniversary of Powerage, the 1978 AC/DC album recorded largely after the sudden death of founder member Malcolm Young's predecessor on rhythm duties — though Young himself remained central. The "AC/DC" series sits awkwardly in Australian coinage history: legal tender by classification, but produced explicitly for the collector market and almost never encountered in circulation. Pad printing, rather than traditional minting, applies the color elements — a process that leaves the finish vulnerable to wear in a way conventional struck coinage is not.
