Released as part of the Royal Australian Mint's ongoing licensed music commemorative program, this piece marks the 15th anniversary of AC/DC's 2008 album Black Ice, which debuted at number one in 29 countries and remains the band's last studio release. The "6th Portrait" designation reflects the new effigy of Elizabeth II by Dominic Donahue, introduced across Commonwealth mints in 2023 — an effigy that saw only months of production before being superseded following the accession of Charles III.
Pad printing, applied directly to the struck blank, is the technology behind the coin's color elements — a process the RAM adopted for small-run commemoratives rather than the enamel inlay used on higher-denomination collector pieces.
