| Reverse description | The reverse presents a densely composed group portrait of diverse volunteer faces, male and female, of varying ages, rendered in relief and filling the entire field in a warm, community-spirited composition designed by Vladimir Gottwald. The figures are shown in close proximity, smiling and overlapping, conveying a sense of collective goodwill and civic engagement. The denomination numeral 20 appears in the lower right field, partially overlaid by the foreground figures. The curved legend AUSTRALIA'S VOLUNTEERS - MAKING A DIFFERENCE arcs around the upper and lower rims, separated by a central dot at the base. |

| Additional information |
The 2003 Australian volunteer commemorative was issued to mark the International Year of Volunteers, a UN-designated observance that Australia embraced with particular enthusiasm given the country's heavy reliance on volunteer labor in emergency services, particularly the rural fire brigades that had been stretched severely during the catastrophic 2001–2002 bushfire seasons.
