背面描述 A pad-printed full-colour scene depicting the arrest of Governor William Bligh during the Rum Rebellion of 1808, rendered in a stylised cartoon manner after a contemporary satirical illustration. Three British soldiers in red military tunics and black shakos are shown in dramatic poses: one figure crouches centrally in a submissive posture while two flanking soldiers stand in attitudes of authority, set against a plain interior background suggestive of a colonial building. The vivid polychrome printing contrasts with the surrounding silver proof surface of the rectangular flan. The composition commemorates the only successful armed takeover of the Australian government, led by officers of the New South Wales Corps.

附加信息

The 2008 Australian numismatic program included several issues marking the bicentenary of the Rum Rebellion — the only successful armed overthrow of a government on Australian soil. On 26 January 1808, officers of the New South Wales Corps, led by Major George Johnston and backed by wool merchant John Macarthur, deposed Governor William Bligh, the same Bligh of Bounty mutiny fame. He was held under arrest for over a year before being permitted to sail.

The pad-printing technique applied to the silver field was still relatively novel in Australian mint production at this date.
