Issued to mark the 75th anniversary of the Siege of Tobruk, this coin recognises the Allied garrison — predominantly Australian — that held the Libyan port against Rommel's Afrika Korps from April to November 1941. The besieged troops were supplied almost entirely by sea via a dangerous Royal Navy and Royal Australian Navy shuttle that German and Italian aircraft attacked relentlessly. Rommel's forces called the defenders "rats" as an insult; the Australians adopted the name immediately.
The 9th Division held the perimeter for 242 days before being relieved.
