The date 1942 is divided at centre left and right by the wheat stalks, with the mintmark letters K and G flanking the ribbon knot below. The legend AUSTRALIA arcs above and THREE PENCE curves along the lower periphery, all within a beaded border. The design is struck to proof standard with frosted devices against a mirror field. |

This piece belongs to the Royal Australian Mint's 1999 Masterpieces in Silver set, which reproduced wartime circulation coinage in fine silver — an explicit acknowledgment that the originals, struck during the austerities of 1942, were made from a debased alloy containing only 50% silver, down from the prewar standard. The 1942 threepence was minted at a moment when Australian silver reserves were under pressure and Pacific theater logistics consumed government attention entirely.
The Melbourne Mint carried the bulk of that wartime threepence production.
