The 1927 Florin this coin replicates was struck to commemorate the opening of Parliament House in Canberra — the first purpose-built federal capital building Australia had occupied since federation in 1901. That original issue was controversial at the time; some considered it premature given the building was already seen as a temporary structure, which it proved to be, replaced by the current Parliament House in 1988.
The Royal Australian Mint's 1998 restrike program used the original hub dies or faithful reproductions to achieve the fine detail the .999 silver blank rewards far more generously than the original cupro-nickel circulation strikes ever did.
