Canberra's selection as Australia's capital was itself a political compromise — neither Sydney nor Melbourne could stomach the other winning, so the 1908 Seat of Government Act mandated a site in New South Wales at least 100 miles from Sydney. The city that resulted from that parliamentary standoff turned 100 in 2013, and the Royal Australian Mint, located in Canberra itself, marked the occasion with this circulation commemorative.
