The Solomon Islands decimalized in 1977, two years before independence, adopting a currency structure designed in coordination with the departing British administration. The 4th portrait of Elizabeth II — the Rank-Broadley effigy introduced in 1998 — reached Pacific Commonwealth issuers on a staggered schedule, and the Solomon Islands were relatively late adopters for some denominations. The switch to nickel plated steel for this series reflected a broader Commonwealth-wide response to rising base metal costs that made cupro-nickel economically unsustainable for low-denomination coinage.
