New Zealand's third-portrait decimal coinage of this period reflects a transitional moment in the country's monetary administration — the Reserve Bank Act of 1989 formally separated monetary policy from government direction, and the coinage issued through the early 1990s was the physical currency circulating during that institutional shift. The 20-cent piece was pulled from circulation in 1999 when New Zealand undertook a wholesale coinage reform, reducing the size of all denominations and eliminating the 5-cent coin entirely.
The Pukaki series name references Lake Pūkaki in the South Island's Mackenzie Basin.
