| 表面の説明 | Right-facing bust of President Charles Robberts Swart, depicted in civilian dress with spectacles, rendered in high relief with fine portrait detail. The legend SOUTH AFRICA arcs along the left field, with the date 1968 positioned to the upper right. The engraver's initials T.S. appear discreetly at the lower right of the portrait, near the truncation. The field surrounding the effigy is smooth and unadorned, accentuating the portrait's sculptural quality. |

Charles Swart was South Africa's first State President under the republican constitution that came into force on 31 May 1961, replacing the Queen as head of state. The 1968 issues bearing his effigy were among the last — his single term ended that same year when Swart declined a second term, making coins dated 1968 a brief transitional footnote before Jacobus Fouché's portrait took over the series.
The English-legend variant, KM#78.1, was struck for the Anglophone market alongside its Afrikaans-legend counterpart, a bilingual division the Pretoria mint maintained across all circulation coinage of the period.
