Obverse description The obverse displays the post-1994 coat of arms of South Africa in high relief against a mirror-polished proof field. The shield at the centre bears two figures in greeting, flanked by symmetrical wheat stalks, with a crossed assegai and knobkierie above. A secretary bird with outstretched wings surmounts the shield, and a protea flower crowns the entire composition. The legend SOUTH AFRICA arcs along the lower periphery, with the motto !KE E: /XARRA //KE inscribed on the ribbon below the shield, and the date 2006 positioned at the top of the field. The initials ALS, denoting engraver Arthur Sutherland, appear in the design.
