| 表面の説明 | The national coat of arms of South Africa is displayed centrally in the field, rendered in detail with the distinctive Khoisan figure supporters and rising sun motif. The date appears at the top of the coin along the upper legend. Bilingual country name legends flank the shield: 'AFRIKA-BORWA' in Sesotho to the left and 'SOUTH AFRICA' in English to the right. The engraver's initials 'MJS' appear in the field. The design reflects the post-2000 coat of arms introduced following the democratic transition. |

South Africa's small-denomination coinage has been bronze plated steel since the mid-1990s cost-cutting reforms that eliminated the last of the country's solid bronze issues. The 20 cent piece in this composition costs the South African Mint less to produce than its face value — a margin that has only widened as copper prices climbed through the 2010s, justifying continued production despite periodic proposals to rationalize the lower denominations out of circulation entirely.
