Additional information

Sierra Leone's first decimal coinage, issued in 1964, preceded the country's formal switch to the leone and cent system by several years — the coins were struck in anticipation of the changeover that officially took effect in 1964 itself, replacing the British West African pound that had circulated across the region under colonial administration. The Bank of Sierra Leone had only been established in 1963, making this among the earliest issues under its authority.
