The Bank of Local Railway of Shansi & Suiyuan was a provincial railway bank operating under the Yan Xishan administration in Shanxi — one of the more durable warlord fiefdoms of the Republican period. Yan ran Shanxi as a near-autonomous state through the 1930s, maintaining his own currency, industries, and rail infrastructure largely independent of Nanjing. This note was printed locally at Taiyuan, the provincial capital, which was unusual — most provincial Chinese railway notes of the period were farmed out to Shanghai commercial printers.
The fractional 20-cent denomination points to everyday transactional use, likely tied to small fare and freight payments on the narrow-gauge Tongpu line.
