Peru's coinage has included braille markings for the visually impaired since a 1997 reform, making this braille-free variant the older design type retained in circulation alongside its tactile counterpart. The coexistence of both versions in active circulation is deliberate policy rather than an error — the Banco Central de Reserva has issued both simultaneously for extended periods, which frustrates type collectors more than it does the general public.
The brass composition replaced an earlier brass-clad steel version as part of ongoing adjustments to control production costs against rising metal prices in the early 2000s.
