This piece belongs to a small group of FAO-program trial strikings produced in the mid-1970s, when the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization was coordinating with central banks worldwide to issue coins promoting agricultural development. Algeria's participation reflected the Boumediene government's broader push for agrarian reform under the National Charter, but trial strikings in gold — rather than the base metals used for circulation — were internal proofing pieces, not intended for public release. The reverse trial designation indicates the obverse die pairing was still under consideration at time of striking.
