Uruguay's 1976 coinage program coincided with the early consolidation of the military dictatorship that had dissolved parliament in 1973. Pattern issues from this period reflect the junta's push to overhaul the monetary system following years of inflationary collapse under civilian governments. This copper piece was never adopted for circulation — the production 20 Centésimos coinage of the period went forward in different compositions.
