Uruguay's silver coinage was suspended for most of the 1930s as the Depression gutted the country's metal reserves and demand for small silver denominations collapsed. The 1942 resumption coincided with wartime silver flows through South America — neutral Uruguay benefited from metal availability even as European mints were converting to base compositions. The .720 fineness used here was a deliberate reduction from earlier Uruguayan silver standards, adopted to stretch bullion further while maintaining a credible specie coinage.
