Uruguay's 1920 coinage was struck during a period of relative monetary stability under the presidency of Baltasar Brum, when the country's economy was still riding the commodity export boom that had financed José Batlle y Ordóñez's sweeping social reforms of the previous decade. The Banco de la República had been established only in 1896, and its early silver issues were closely tied to Argentine monetary conventions — the .800 fineness here reflects a regional standard rather than a purely Uruguayan decision.
