Banco Mauá y Ca. was the Argentine subsidiary of the financial empire built by Irineu Evangelista de Sousa, the Barão de Mauá — Brazil's most ambitious 19th-century industrialist and banker. The Rosario branch operated during a period when provincial and private banks in Argentina issued their own circulating notes with minimal federal oversight, a situation that ended definitively with the 1890s banking reforms.
