附加信息

Pattern coinage for Uruguay in this period was largely driven by competitive bids from European minting houses — the Hamburg Mint, Monnaie de Paris, and others routinely submitted unsolicited or solicited trial pieces hoping to secure contracts from smaller republics. This piece falls into that competitive tendering environment. Whether it was struck on Uruguayan government commission or submitted speculatively is not firmly established for KM#Pn37.

The adopted 20 centavos of 1901 went to the Monnaie de Paris in copper-nickel, suggesting this 1899 pattern was part of the evaluation process that preceded that contract award.
