The 1950 Argentine 20 centavos belongs to a series explicitly rebranded under Perón's government to replace the earlier Libertad imagery with that of José de San Martín — a calculated appropriation of the national independence hero to reinforce Peronist nationalism. San Martín had died in voluntary exile in Boulogne-sur-Mer in 1850, a century before this coin was struck, and the centenary was leveraged extensively in state propaganda that year.
The copper-nickel alloy was already under pressure by this period; Argentina would abandon it within a few years as raw material costs and economic instability forced repeated composition changes across the centavo series.
