In 1921, the Peruvian Amazon department of Loreto briefly declared itself an autonomous federal state under a separatist movement led by Cervantes and backed by regional elites resentful of Lima's centralized authority. This note — printed locally by El Oriente, the Iquitos newspaper — is direct evidence of how thin the resources of that provisional government actually were: a regional press, not a security printer, producing emergency scrip for a rebellion that collapsed within months.
The reliance on El Oriente as printer makes genuine examples relatively easy to counterfeit in retrospect, and authentication depends heavily on paper stock and ink consistency specific to that press.
