| Obverse description | Central design features the Portuguese colonial arms of Mozambique: the national shield of Portugal superimposed upon an armillary sphere, the whole surmounted by a mural crown. Two ornamental rosette devices flank the lower field. The circular legend 'MOÇAMBIQUE' arcs around the upper periphery, while the date appears in the lower exergual area, all enclosed within a beaded border. |

Issued in the final years of Portuguese colonial administration, these pieces were struck just as the Carnation Revolution in Lisbon — April 1974 — dismantled the Estado Novo regime and set Mozambique on an accelerated path to independence, achieved in June 1975. Coins dated 1974 were effectively minted for a colonial authority that ceased to exist within months of their production.
