Bolivia's monetary situation in the mid-1960s was shaped by the stabilization program imposed after the catastrophic inflation of the 1950s, when the boliviano lost so much value that the government eventually replaced it entirely with the peso boliviano in 1963. These 20 centavos pieces were among the first small-denomination coins issued under the new currency, struck in nickel-clad steel as a cost-conscious measure at a time when the country's tin revenues were increasingly volatile.
