Peru's mid-century brass coinage was part of a broader regional shift away from silver-bearing alloys that accelerated after World War II drove up metal prices across Latin America. The 20 centavos denomination had been through multiple compositional changes in the preceding decades before settling into this brass iteration. The KM#221.2b designation distinguishes it from earlier variants within the same design family, tracking incremental specification changes that the Peruvian government made as it rationalized production at the Lima mint through the 1950s.
