The Banco Nacional Ultramarino issued this 20 Centavos note in 1914 for use in Portuguese overseas territories — though without additional context from the specific overprint or place of payment, pinning down exactly which colony received it requires checking the face text directly. BNU operated across Mozambique, Angola, Cape Verde, São Tomé, Goa, Macau, and Timor simultaneously, often using Bradbury Wilkinson plates adapted between territories with minimal modification.
Bradbury Wilkinson's involvement with Portuguese colonial currency ran for decades; the London firm was among the most technically accomplished intaglio printers of the period, and BNU returned to them repeatedly for fractional notes that saw hard daily use in markets where coin shortages were chronic.
