Opmerkingen

The Banco Nacional de la República Argentina was itself a troubled institution — founded in 1872, it collapsed in 1891 as part of the broader financial catastrophe that also brought down Baring Brothers in London. Notes of this 1884 series were issued during a period of aggressive credit expansion that preceded that crisis, when the bank was effectively printing to cover government deficits.

B. Lange was a Buenos Aires commercial printer, not a specialist security press — an unusual choice for fiduciary currency, and one that reflects both the limited infrastructure available locally and the political pressure to keep production domestic.
