A mule combining two obverse dies — one from the Kiangsu-Chingkiang mint and one from the Kiangsu-Soochow mint — this piece almost certainly escaped the foundry through negligence rather than intent, during a period when provincial mints operated with minimal central oversight. The Guangxu-era provincial cash machine coinages were already plagued by inconsistent die management, and Kiangsu ran two geographically separate facilities whose dies were not always rigorously segregated.
Confirmed two-obverse mules from this series are genuinely rare in any form — most examples attributed as such turn out to be altered or misattributed. Authentication against confirmed die marriages is essential.
