Most provinces adopted copper for their cash denominations following the 1900 Board of Revenue directive to modernize token coinage, but Szechuan's mint — established in Chengdu with imported British machinery — ran brass through the presses during this transitional window, likely drawing on available stock rather than deliberate policy.
