Obverse description Jugate busts of the Dioscuri facing right, rendered in low relief on an irregular flan with a granular, heavily patinated surface. The two youthful male heads are shown one behind the other, each surmounted by a pileus (conical cap), with characteristic stars visible above. The Latin magistrate legend M VIPSANIO ATHENAEO extends around the field, naming the duovir Marcus Vipsanius Athenaeus responsible for the issue. The portraiture reflects provincial Roman engraving conventions of the late Republican period in Sicily.
