Venezuela's hyperinflationary collapse made most paper issues from this period economically worthless within weeks of release. By mid-2018, the official inflation rate exceeded one million percent annually, and a 20 Bolívar note represented a fraction of a U.S. cent in purchasing power almost immediately upon circulation.
