Issued to coincide with the UN Decade for Women (1976–1985), this coin was produced while Ethiopia was in the grip of the Derg military regime — an awkward sponsor for a series nominally celebrating women's rights. The Derg had come to power in 1974 by deposing Haile Selassie and was actively conducting the Red Terror campaigns through much of the decade the coin commemorates.
Struck in a limited proof format primarily for collector export, it generated hard currency for a government that badly needed it.
