Beschrijving voorzijde The selectively gold-plated coat of arms of the Republic of Panama occupies the central field, rendered in high relief against a mirror-polished black background. The shield displays the four traditional quartered emblems — crossed swords and rifle, the cornucopia, the fasces, and a winged wheel — surmounted by a harpy eagle with wings displayed. A semicircle of nine gold stars arches above the shield. The circumferential legend REPÚBLICA DE PANAMÁ appears in bold raised letters along the upper border, with the denomination VEINTE BALBOAS inscribed along the lower border, both in silver-toned Latin script against the dark field.

Aanvullende informatie

World Youth Day 2019 was held in Panama City in January of that year — the first time the event had been hosted in Central America. Pope Francis attended, drawing an estimated 700,000 pilgrims to the final mass at Metro Park. Panama's mint seized on the occasion with a run of commemorative silver issues, of which this selectively gold-plated 20 Balboas piece is among the more elaborate.

The Balboa itself has not circulated as physical coinage in any meaningful sense since Panama relies almost entirely on U.S. dollars for daily transactions — the denomination exists largely for commemorative purposes.
