Reverse description The official logo of World Youth Day Panama 2019, designed by Ambar Calvo, occupies the central field. At the center of the composition stands a stylized effigy of the Virgin Mary wearing a five-pointed crown, each point representing one of the five continents sending pilgrims to the event. The silhouette of the Panamanian Isthmus and the Panama Canal are integrated into the design, symbolizing both the host nation and the pilgrim's journey toward Christ through Mary. The surrounding legend JORNADA MUNDIAL DE LA JUVENTUD arches along the upper border, with PANAMÁ 2019 inscribed below.

Additional information

World Youth Day 2019 was held in Panama City in January of that year — the first time the event had been hosted in Central America. Pope Francis attended, drawing an estimated 700,000 pilgrims to the final mass at Metro Park. Panama's mint seized on the occasion with a run of commemorative silver issues, of which this selectively gold-plated 20 Balboas piece is among the more elaborate.

The Balboa itself has not circulated as physical coinage in any meaningful sense since Panama relies almost entirely on U.S. dollars for daily transactions — the denomination exists largely for commemorative purposes.
