Obverse description The national coat of arms of Panama occupies the central field, depicting a quartered shield bearing crossed rifles and a sword in the upper left, an axe and spade in the upper right, the Isthmus of Panama with a rising sun over the Pacific and Atlantic oceans in the lower left, and a cornucopia with a winged wheel in the lower right. The shield is flanked by two national flags on lances and supported by stars at the base, with a harpy eagle displayed above bearing a ribbon inscribed PRO MUNDI BENEFICIO. Nine stars arc above the eagle. The legend REPUBLICA DE PANAMA curves along the upper periphery, while 20 BALBOAS curves along the lower periphery, with the fineness mark LEY 0.500 inscribed in the lower field beneath the arms.
