Panama's 20 Balboa series has long been the country's vehicle for high-denomination commemorative silver, a tradition stretching back to the massive 1970s issues struck by Franklin Mint. This 2019 entry takes its name from the Santa María, the carrack that served as Columbus's flagship on the 1492 crossing — the vessel ran aground on the Haitian coast on Christmas Day of that year and was never recovered, her timbers reportedly used to construct the first European fort in the Americas, La Navidad.
