The surrounding border legend reads 'REPÚBLICA DE PANAMÁ' along the upper arc and 'VEINTE BALBOAS' along the lower arc, both in raised silver-toned lettering against a deeply mirrored proof field. The motto 'PRO MUNDI BENEFICIO' appears on a scroll across the shield. The contrasting gold-plated inner field and silver-toned outer legend band create a striking two-tone effect characteristic of this commemorative issue. |

The Church of Our Lady of Mercy in Panama City is among the oldest surviving religious structures in the Americas, with roots tracing to the early colonial period. Panama issued this piece under its ongoing program of large-format silver commemoratives documenting national heritage sites — a series that has grown considerably since the 1970s when the country first leaned into high-denomination collector coinage following the Torrijos-era currency reforms that retained the balboa as a unit of account while the U.S. dollar dominated physical circulation.
The selective gold plating was applied at the Mint of Poland, which has struck the majority of Panama's recent commemorative issues.
