The encircling legend REPUBLICA DE PANAMA runs along the upper periphery, while the denomination 20 BALBOAS appears along the lower border. | Description du revers | A bold portrait of Vasco Núñez de Balboa, the Spanish conquistador and first European to sight the Pacific Ocean from the New World, is rendered in high relief facing left, wearing a crested morion helmet and gorget of period armour. A harpy eagle, Panama's national bird, is depicted in profile with folded wings immediately above the explorer's helmeted head, resting upon a rocky promontory that alludes to the moment of discovery. A scroll-shaped banner across the upper portion of the field bears the date 1985 in raised numerals. The curved legend BALBOA · DESCUBRIDOR DEL PACIFICO arcs along the left and lower periphery of the coin.
