The portrait, executed in high relief in the neoclassical style, is the work of engraver Niccolò Cerbara, whose name appears in small capitals below the truncation of the bust. The Latin legend PIVS IX PONT MAX ANN IV curves around the periphery, divided on either side of the effigy, and the entire design is bordered by a continuous dentilated inner circle. |
