| Obverse description | Draped bust of Pope Pius IX facing left, wearing the traditional papal zucchetto (skullcap) and richly ornamented cope with floral and foliate motifs. The portrait, executed in high relief in the neoclassical style, is the work of engraver Niccolò Cerbara, whose name appears in small capitals below the truncation of the bust. The Latin legend PIVS IX PONT MAX ANN IV curves around the periphery, divided on either side of the effigy, and the entire design is bordered by a continuous dentilated inner circle. |
