Thailand's post-war currency reconstruction leaned heavily on De La Rue during this period, with several denominations in the Series 9 issue printed in London while domestic printing capacity was rebuilt. The "Young Portrait" designation distinguishes this type from the later mature effigy of Rama IX — Bhumibol Adulyadej had ascended the throne in 1946 at nineteen, and the portrait used here reflects that youth, before the more formal regal image became standardized across later series.
Red serials on this type predate the shift to black, marking it as the earlier of the two Type I printings. Pick 72 is not a rare note in circulated grades, but the red-serial variant attracts disproportionate collector attention relative to its actual scarcity.
