This issue pairs Rama X — the current monarch Vajiralongkorn — with Rama VIII, his uncle Ananda Mahidol, who died from a gunshot wound to the head in his bedroom at the Grand Palace on June 9, 1946, at age twenty. The death was ruled a homicide; three palace attendants were eventually executed for it, though the case has never been officially closed and public discussion of it in Thailand remains legally hazardous under lèse-majesté statutes. The commemorative pairing of the two reigns is a pointed dynastic statement.
