Issued to mark Queen Sirikit's 90th birthday on August 12, 2022, this commemorative was released as the Queen Mother remained largely out of public view following a stroke she suffered in 2012. The occasion carried unusual weight: Sirikit holds the title Queen Mother under Rama X, having been the consort of Rama IX — Bhumibol Adulyadej — whose 70-year reign made her one of the longest-serving royal consorts in modern history.
The 15-gram copper-nickel specification places it among the heavier issues in Thailand's commemorative 20-baht series, a format the Royal Thai Mint has used consistently for such occasions since the 1990s.
