Issued to mark the centenary of Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, founded in 1875 under King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) as the Department of Foreign Affairs — a direct response to mounting treaty pressure from European colonial powers then encircling Siamese territory. The ministry's early decades were defined less by diplomacy than by survival, negotiating the 1893 Franco-Siamese Treaty that cost Thailand the left bank of the Mekong.
