Issued to mark the centenary of King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi, one of Thailand's leading science and engineering institutions founded on the site of a former royal cremation ground along the Chao Phraya. Commemorative 20 Baht pieces of this type are struck in relatively modest quantities for the Thai domestic market and rarely reach international circulation, which keeps surviving examples in correspondingly fresh condition. The university itself traces its administrative origins to 1960, though the centenary framing references an earlier technical school lineage claimed through institutional succession.
