Issued to mark the 80th birthday of Princess Galyani Vadhana, elder sister of King Bhumibol Adulyadej, this commemorative was released during a period when the Royal Thai Mint was producing commemoratives at a notably high rate — a pattern that drew some collector criticism regarding dilution of the series. Galyani Vadhana was a respected scholar of French language and music, holding faculty positions at Thai universities and widely regarded as one of the more intellectually prominent members of the Chakri dynasty. She died in January 2008.
