Emerita Augusta — modern Mérida in Spain — was founded around 25 BC to settle veterans of the Cantabrian Wars, the grinding northwestern campaigns that effectively completed Rome's conquest of Iberia. The colony held the right to strike local bronze, and this issue belongs to that civic coinage produced under Augustus's long reign. RPC I 14 is a well-documented type, but colonial bronzes from Emerita circulated hard in a frontier veteran community and survivors in any decent state of preservation are genuinely scarce.
