Kibbutz scrip occupies a peculiar corner of Israeli notaphily — these were internal currency tokens issued by individual kibbutzim to manage member spending within the community economy, insulating the collective from external market pressures. Yad Mordechai, named after Mordechai Anielewicz, the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising commander, was founded by Polish Holocaust survivors in 1943 and famously held off the Egyptian army for six days during the 1948 war before evacuating.
By 1969 the practice of issuing denominated paper scrip was already declining across the kibbutz movement. This 20 Agorot piece is among the smaller denominations that circulated only within the kibbutz's internal shop system.
